How old do you have you be to take the Theory Test?
Unfortunately you can only sit your Theory Test after you turn 17 years old.  This is because a provisional licence is needed in order to take the test however it is not against the rules to book your theory test before your 17th birthday.

What do I have to bring to the test centre?
You MUST bring both parts of your photo card driving licence on your test day or you will simply lose your test fee.  The DSA is very clear that you must have both parts of your photo card driving licence to take a theory test.  If you fail to show your driving licence or photo then you will lose your test fee and have to book another one.

Should I start taking driving lessons before I have passed my theory test?
It’s actually a very good idea to do this!  By being on the roads at the same time as preparing for your theory test you will gain a better understanding of the highway code and why certain rules are in place.

If I have a full car license and want a motorcycle license, am I exempt from sitting the motorcycle theory test?
You must sit the motorcycle theory test even if you already hold a full car license.

I have some special needs, is there any way to arrange for this?
If you have any special needs you must make sure that you arrange this at your test centre before your test.  The following facilities can be provided for you:

Translator - you must cover any fees that occur

Reading difficulties such as Dyslexia – If you have trouble reading and are worried that you will run out of time you can ask for an English/Welsh voiceover.  You are also allowed to ask for more time in the theory test but you will have to provide evidence supporting your reading difficulties.

Hearing difficulties – An interpreter can be arranged to help you take the test but this must be arranged before at your test centre before you sit the theory test.  You can also request your test to be in British Sign Language.

Language difficulties – The theory test can be requested in 21 different language voiceovers.  The voiceover works by reading out the question and answers in your chosen language simply by moving the cursor of your mouse over the text.

These are the languages which are available in voiceover:
Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Dari, English, Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Kashmiri, Kurdish, Mirpuri, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Pushto, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu, Welsh

Are the Hazard Perception clips the same for all driving categories?
Every category has the same Hazard Perception test as the awareness and judgment needed when driving on the road is the same in all vehicles.

How does the hazard perception test work?
The hazard perception part is also delivered on a computer but you respond by clicking a button on the mouse. You'll be presented with a series of 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes. In each clip there'll be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards.
To achieve a high score you'll need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five.
You won't be able to review your answers to the hazard perception test; as on the road, you'll only have one chance to respond to the developing hazard.
The pass mark for the car and motorcycle hazard perception part of the theory test is 44 out of 75. For lorries and buses the pass mark is 50 out of 75.

What should I bring to the test?
You must bring with you:

  • The photocard and paper counterpart of your photocard driving license.
  • Your paper licence and passport if you have an old style licence
  • Details of your test appointment which you should have in the form of a booking card.

Arrive in plenty of time and make sure you have all of the above or you may lose your booking fee.
